Excerpt from The Teaching of English in the Universities of England: With a Note in Comment on the Article
I am not overlooking the very great power of the Report for good. This appears on almost every page, and makes it seem ungrateful for a teacher of English to criticize details. Above all, its impartiality is praiseworthy. Any one who looks through the list of members of the Committee will see that it consisted of people whose interests are rather in English literature than in English language, and in literature rather modern than mediaeval. In spite of this, the justice with which the Committee have striven to hold the balance ought to be recognized. They show that sense of fair play which one always expects from a body of Englishmen and Englishwomen. The Committee empha size the importance of mediaeval studies, and of the study of the English language. They insist that the normal English 'school' should be a School' of Language as well as Literature.
But protest must be made against the despondent view which the Committee take as to the qualifications to be expected from the candidate for English Honours.

Seller: Forgotten Books, London, United Kingdom
Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book focuses on the teaching of English as a part of university education, particularly in the United Kingdom. As part of this exploration, the author considers the importance of studying historic texts, such as Old English, in the context of teaching modern English. The author positions the role of Old English as an integral part of understanding modern English literature, especially from the time of Chaucer onwards. The text argues that omitting Old and Middle English from the curriculum would leave students lacking the breadth of knowledge required to teach and analyze the subject effectively. The author believes that a well-rounded English education requires a solid foundation in the history of the language, connecting with Old English. This engaging analysis provides insight into the interconnectedness of historic and modern English language and literature studies.
