Excerpt from The Future of Local Government
The purpose of this book is to put forward a possible basis for a reorganization of Local Govern ment which will bring about this synthesis, and will do so on a scale in harmony with present-day economic development. But, it will doubtless be asked at the very outset, why set about making such a synthesis, even if it be possible? What is the case in favour of the creation of new effective units of Local Government which will bring town an-d country together? What need is there to upset things by the introduction of this new system? It is not pos sible, at this early point in this book, to give a complete or conclusive answer, which must depend on many factors still to be considered; but it is possible immediately to urge certain broad arguments of principle in favour of the change. These arguments are in part economic; but they are by no means wholly so. They are, as will [be seen more clearly at a later stage, also largely political; and they include important social and psychological elements which must not be ignored.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book sets out to make the case for the creation of a new level of local government in the UK - regional administration - to bring together urban and rural areas in more coherent units. The author argues that while the existing local government structure has become obsolete, there is a growing need for increased local autonomy, more effective cooperation between different types of local authorities, and for a new focus on social and economic development. The author examines the current problems of local government and the failure of national government to support local services; the advantages of regionalism in areas such as housing, transport, and economic development; the potential of regional government to address imbalances between urban and rural areas; and the challenges of coordinating the efforts of different regions. The book concludes that regional government is both a practical and a necessary step in the evolution of local government in the UK.
