This book explores the use of education in the implementation of large-scale information systems. It builds on the growing body of research on implementation strategies, and suggests that education can be as well-formalized and effective as the traditional Systems Development Life Cycle approach. The author describes one particular educational intervention, a workshop called "Preparing for IPS," which was developed to help staff in a large bank prepare for the implementation of a new integrated processing system. The workshop was designed to close the culture gap between marketing and operations personnel, and to ensure that participants understood the need for action on their part. The workshop was found to be successful in meeting its objectives, and the author argues that similar educational interventions can be an effective way to improve the implementation of information systems. The book offers a valuable framework for understanding the role of education in implementation. It provides a detailed description of the design, delivery, and impact of one educational intervention, and offers eight general principles for the design of future interventions. The book also discusses the broader context of implementation research, and the need for a more comprehensive approach to the management of information technology.
