Excerpt from Two Lives: A Poem
The note of the poem is primarily personal. It presents an authentic record of real individual growth, revised in the light of a later reading, and only so far idealized as the issues attained and the temper portrayed are ideal themselves. But the personal note is enlarged in the process to one fuller and more universal. As the develop ment and redemption of a single soul are followed along the lines of the more permanent historic movements, and under the pressure Of the manifold forces Of modern life, the limits of individual vision must pass in a sense into a panorama of time, and the confessions of a private spirit become the reflection Of an age.
