Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the life of the English politician Algernon Sydney, a prominent figure during the turbulent 17th-century English Civil War, Commonwealth, and Restoration periods. Covering his military, political, diplomatic, and philosophical thought, the author explores Sydney's staunch Republican ideology, which he believed was the only true form of English government. The book examines Sydney's exile to France and his fraught relationship with powerful figures like the Earl of Leicester and King Charles II. The author also analyzes Sydney's 'Discourses Concerning Government', a seminal work that expounded his ideas on politics, justice, and liberty. Through this study, the reader gains deep insights into the complexities of 17th-century English politics, the clash between monarchy and republicanism, and the enduring influence of Sydney's ideas on later political thought.
