The greater part of this work was delivered in the shape of lectures at Gresham College. For that reason I have retained the lecture style of delivery. I should have hesitated to prepare them for publication, but I was pressed to do so by some of my audience. I have there fore ventured to put them together in the shape in which they now appear.
