Excerpt from Principles of Direct Current Machines
This book has been prepared with the object of placing before junior and senior students of electrical engineering a reasonably complete treatment of the fundamental principles that underly the design and operation of all types of direct-current machinery. Instead of attempting to touch the high Spots in the whole field of direct-current engineering, attention has been coneen trated upon certain important features that are ordinarily dis missed with little more than passing mention, but which, in the Opinion of the author, are vital to a thorough grasp of the subject. For example, the book will be found to contain in Chapter III a full derivation of the rules covering armature windings (follow ing Professor Arnold), in addition to the usual description of typical windings; Chapters VI and VII include a considerable amount of new material concerning the Operating character istics of generators and motors, the treatment being largely graphical and including the use of three-dimensional diagrams for depicting the mutual relationships among all of the variables; and in Chapters VIII and IX there has been developed a much more extensive treatment of the important subject of commuta tion than has been heretofore, easily accessible to students of the type for whom the book is intended. In the selection and arrangement of the material dealing with commutation, care has been exercised to eliminate those minute details and exces sive refinements that are more likely to confuse than to clarify.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive guide to the fundamental principles behind direct-current machinery, aimed at junior and senior electrical engineering students. It covers topics such as magnetic fields, induced currents, and armature windings, with a particular emphasis on the design and operation of generators and motors. The author takes a unique approach by delving deeper into aspects of direct-current engineering often glossed over in other textbooks. For instance, the book provides a thorough derivation of rules covering armature windings, explores the operating characteristics of generators and motors with innovative graphical representations, and offers an in-depth analysis of commutation, a key aspect of motor design. The author recognizes the tendency for students to focus solely on mathematical solutions, and thus emphasizes the physical concepts underpinning the equations presented. This book offers a balanced treatment that combines mathematical analysis with clear explanations of the underlying physical phenomena, helping students develop a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Through this approach, the book equips readers with a deeper understanding of the complex workings of direct-current machinery, providing them with a solid foundation for further study and practical application. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
