Synopsis
Excerpt from A History of French Versification
There remains the pleasant task of thanking Pro fessors T. F. Tout and James Tait of Owens College, whose kindly advice did much to encourage me in my task. Thanks are also due to Mr. E. E. Kellett, of the Leys School, for valuable suggestions, and to Mr. A. R. Ainsworth, of King's College, Cambridge, for reading through a large part of the proofs.

The book offers a comprehensive overview of the intricate rules that govern the counting of syllables in French verse, addressing the complexities of silent vowels and elision. The author further analyzes the different types of rhyme employed, from masculine and feminine to rich and leonine, and investigates the role of the cesura, or pause, within the line.
