Excerpt from Shadows of the Rood: Or Types of Our Suffering Redeemer Jesus Christ Occuring in the Book of Genesis; Being the Substance of a Series of Moral Discourses Delivered in the Church of the Assumption During the Lent of 1856
I have abstained, very unwillingly, from appending notes to the text: some most tempting opportunities occur in every dis course. But, to have done so would have been a task too great for my little leisure, and would, perhaps, have given an appear ance of erudition to my book beyond its object and purpose. I would, therefore, make one or two short observations, here which seem especially called for.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers to follow a series of moral discourses on the Scripture. Beginning in Septuagesima week, the author opens the first chapter of Genesis and interprets the ancient prophecies contained therein. The author, a priest, has carefully sought guidance from the Fathers of the Church in explaining these sacred passages and has consulted more recent authors to provide a comprehensive understanding. The author's mystical interpretation of the Mosaic writings exhibits the spirit of prophecy - one of mystery and allegory - showing how future events were veiled and wrapped in a pale and misty atmosphere. Only when the light of the morning breaks forth are the full outline and proportions of the prophecies discovered. The author desires in a future volume to continue this subject throughout the entire series of the Prophetic Books, for there are treasures of piety set off in simple and chaste style in this volume that will make it welcome in every Catholic home.
