While these free States were doing so much for mankind, the larger portion of the human family were under the dominion of a cruel despotism. The Persian Empire under Xerxes exhausted the country to minister to the pride and ostentation of a Single man. His innumerable armies, his bridge of boats, his fleets which covered the sea, his gorgeous tents, his satraps whose armour was inlaid with gold, and the handles of their swords set with gems, his elephants with castles upon their backs, his eunuchs and his harems melted away before the genius of a Themistocles and the valour of a handful of free citizens. Again and again the hosts of Persia were broken upon the shores of Greece; their riches and their greatness have passed away like a fan tastic dream, while, amid the vicissitudes of fortune, the works of ancient Greece, and the products of her genius, rise to mock the ruins of time, and serve as guides to direct the artists of all succeeding ages.
