Synopsis

Explore how influence, not force, shapes modern government and education. This book argues that the power of governance grows through influence—fostering self-government and cooperative effort—rather than relying on force alone. It traces ideas from Washington’s remark on influence to practical reforms in schools, universities, and public policy.

In these pages, the author links education, democracy, and public life, showing how schools and universities act as organized, lasting forces in government. It examines how modern states seek to replace external coercion with internal self-control, and how moral education, juvenile reform, and civil administration fit into a broader system of influence.

  • Understand how government aims to promote local and individual self-government through education.

  • See how elementary and higher education connect to democratic life and public policy.

  • Learn why education is viewed as a tool to replace punishment with moral development and self-discipline.

  • Explore historical examples, from policy conferences to juvenile courts, that illustrate government by influence in action.

Ideal for readers of political history, education policy, and the evolution of democracy in public life.
