Excerpt from The Still Life of the Middle Temple: With Some of Its Table Talk
During a long membership Of'the Middle Temple, I have been repeatedly asked to write 'a Book on the Inn' from its social point of View, a task apparently never before attempted. I had just this one qualification, that entering after many years passed in other pursuits, I at once grasped a certain continuity of Middle Temple life with old Cambridge days, and was able to realize to some extent college times over again. A regular attendant at hall and church, many points there fore presented themselves to me as having a special interconnection and mutual self-dependence, which I have attempted to bring out in the follow ing pages.
