Excerpt from Diary of a Tour in Spain: During the Spring and Summer of 1853
A less glorious exploit occurred there in 1702 during the War of Succession. It is related by Macaulay,1 after failing at Cadiz, the English fleet was off the coast of Portugal on the way back to England, when the Duke of Ormond received intelligence that the treasure-ships from America had just arrived in Europe, and had, in order to avoid his armament, repaired to the harbour of Vigo. The cargo consisted, it was said, of more than three millions sterling in gold and silver.
