Excerpt from Observations on the Attempted Application of Pantheistic Principles to the Theory and Historic Criticism of the Gospel: Being the Christian Advocate's Publications for the Years 1840-1844 The present volume contains a Second Edition of the five Essays which the lamented author published separately in successive years, from 1840 to 1844, while he held the office of Christian Advocate in the University of Cambridge. The task which Dr Mill undertook, as Christian Advocate, was to refute the Mythical Interpretation of the Evangelic History; and the plan of the work, as sketched by himself, comprised a First Part, discussing the application of Pantheistic Principles to the theory of the Gospel, and a Second Part, considering their application to the actual Historical Records of Christianity. This undertaking was nearly, but not wholly, accomplished. The First Part appeared in a complete form as the Christian Advocate's publication for the year 1840. The Second Part was intended to contain three chapters: I. On the Birth of St John the Baptist; II. On the Descent and Parentage of our Lord; and III. On the details of our Lord's Birth and Infancy, as recorded by St Matthew and St Luke. Of this last chapter the concluding section alone is wanting. It would have contained a vindication of the Second Chapter of St Luke's Gospel against Mythical Interpreters, and a proof of its consistency with St Matthew's narrative; but this final portion of the whole work was never written. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This captivating and erudite book provides an in-depth exploration of the historical and theological context surrounding the Christian Gospels. The author, a renowned historian and theologian, examines the various interpretations of the Gospels, particularly the application of mythical and rationalistic approaches, and their impact on understanding the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. The book begins by analyzing the rise of mythical and rationalistic methods in biblical criticism, tracing their development from early Christian thinkers to the present day. The author argues that these approaches have led to a distorted understanding of the Gospels, obscuring their historical and theological significance. Delving into the core of the book, the author presents a rigorous critique of the mythical school of interpretation, championed by figures such as David Friedrich Strauss. He demonstrates the inherent flaws in the mythical approach, highlighting its reliance on speculative theories and its disregard for historical evidence. The author then turns his attention to the rationalistic school of interpretation, which attempts to explain the Gospels solely through natural causes. He argues that this approach fails to account for the unique and miraculous elements of the Gospels, which are central to the Christian faith. Throughout the book, the author consistently emphasizes the importance of understanding the Gospels within their original historical and cultural context. He draws on a wealth of ancient sources and patristic literature to illuminate the beliefs and practices of the early Christian community. In conclusion, this book offers a comprehensive and persuasive critique of mythical and rationalistic interpretations of the Gospels. It presents a compelling case for the historical and theological reliability of the Gospels, providing a valuable resource for scholars, theologians, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the Christian faith.
