Excerpt from A Guide to the Proper Management and Education of Blind Children: During Their Earlier Years (Whether in Their Own Family, in Public Schools, or Under Private Teachers)
The Blind may be divided into two classes - those who were born blind, and those who have become blind after having seen. Very few are born blind, but numbers lose their sight in the early stages of their existence. Soon after birth infants are liable to inflammation of the eyes, and, formerly, many of those cases terminated in partial or total blindness, but, since the introductioul' of Vaccination and the improved mode of treatment, as well as to the increased facility with which the poorer classes can obtain Medical assistance, the cases of loss of sight have been greatly diminished. 3 Still, in this country, upwards of Blind persons were registered in the last Census! Of this number no inconsiderable portion will, of course, be found amongst the wealthier classes; but as they seldom move about, except in carriages, or under the guidance of friends, they are not so readily recognized as those who are led by a dog, or have to grope their way by help of a stick. This has given rise to the idea that very few blind are to be found among the rich. Doubtless the larger proportion occurs among the poor, as they are more exposed to accidents in factories, &c., and can less afford to seek the aid of the Oculist, than those in better circumstances.

Excerpt from A Guide to the Proper Management and Education of Blind Children: During Their Earlier Years (Whether in Their Own Family, in Public Schools, or Under Private Teachers) The human race seems to have been subject to Blindness at all times and in all countries. The enthroned Monarch is no more exempt from it than the humblest of his subjects, for it spares neither age, sex, nor condition. Today we gaze with delight upon the beauties of nature - to-morrow we may be deprived of that pleasure, and doomed to perpetual darkness, - even amidst the blaze of noon.
