Excerpt from The Rural Problem
Although personally responsible for the Report, I am indebted to the work of mv colleagues on the Committee for most of the information it contains. Where so many helped it is impossible to thank them all but I feel bound to acknowledge the valuable memoranda prepared by Mr. And Mrs. E. R. Pease, Mr. H. R. Gledstone, Mr. C. M. Grieve, Mr. R. A. Bray, Mr. Hugh Aronson, and Mr. G. P. Blizard, parts of which have been incorporated in the present volume. I am particularly indebted also to Mr. Sidney Webb for many useful suggestions, to Miss Gertrude Westbrook for preparing the bibliography, and to the Secretary of the Committee, Captain A. Imbert-terry, for his constant help, not only during the inquiry, but also in preparing the Report.
The Land Question is likely to be much discussed on public platforms and in the Press during the next few years. This volume claims to be a serious contribution to the discussion. We have tried to present in a handy form facts and figures up to date on many aspects of the question, and we hope that these will render the book useful even to readers who may differ from some of the conclusions we have based upon them.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the living conditions, poverty, and exploitation of agricultural labourers in Edwardian Britain. It examines the decline in rural living standards, increase in rural depopulation, and the reasons for the extreme poverty that was endemic within rural communities. The author argues that the industrial revolution in Britain and America created an unbalanced civilisation by destroying a healthy relationship between rural and urban populations. The book calls for a minimum wage and other reforms to address the rural poverty, which the author argues, is a drag on the health of the nation and its people. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the history of rural Britain, labour movements, the agricultural revolution, labour and social reform, and poverty in the early 20th century.
