Excerpt from Observations on the Cultivation of Roses in Pots: Including the Autobiography of a Pot-Rose
The Rose has long been a. Favourite flower, not only in England, but throughout Europe generally; and there is, perhaps, none other that has ever received such un limited attention. The ardour manifested of late years in the cultivation of this flower has produced rapid improvements. Many varieties which for some years past have been held in high estimation are now falling aside before the constant introduction of new varieties, which have materially widened the range of this beauti ful genus, as well as improved the individual varieties of which it is composed. It is not, however, the design here to treat of Roses generally,* but of their cultivation in Pots, and this in as brief a manner as the explication of the subject will allow.
