Excerpt from Oxford and the Rural Problem: Being the First Sidney Ball Memorial Lecyure December 1, 1920
The policy of rural neglect was incidental to the building up Of British commercial and industrial supremacy. Great Britain's insular position and the fact that she was a sea and not a land power led directly to this fatal policy, which was inaugurated during the industrial revolution. In the formative years of the industrial era England was immune from the interference of militarism with her industrial life. On the other hand she had in her sea-control every inducement and opportunity to make commercial expansion abroad keep pace with industrial develop ment at home. With the Opening up of vast tracts of Virgin soil in America, and with the rapid growth of the merchant marine, food could be more easily and more profitably brought in from the outside and paid for by the products Of factories than it could be grown at home. This simple fact is the basis of the British economic policy with its subordination to urban interests.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a spirited defense of agriculture's importance to society, laying out a triple-pronged approach to addressing the rural crisis: better farming, better business, and better living. The author draws on three decades of experience grappling with this problem in his native Ireland, describing both the practical work done there to reorganize the dairy industry and establish agricultural cooperatives, as well as the theoretical principles guiding that work. He asserts that agriculture must be treated not only as an industry and a business, but also as a way of life. As such, he explains that enhancing the social and cultural aspects of rural communitiesâ"particularly by forming business associations and cooperatives that fulfill both economic and social needsâ"is essential to stem the flow of people from the countryside to the big cities.
