Excerpt from A Modern Rhetoric
The plan of the book is psychologic. Informal composition is taken up almost at the beginning, and is treated broadly as a whole before the closer study of sentences and paragraphs is introduced. The pupil is thus encouraged to express himself freely, before he is required to write, as Quintilian puts it, with force, point, and vehemence of style. The stages through which he passes from elementary to formal composition are easy and gradual. All help is given to make him feel that composition is a practical and profitable exercise.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a working textbook primarily designed for classroom drill. It is not a formal treatise on rhetoric but instead imparts practical applications of the leading principles underlying good composition through the exploration of informal composition and later, the closer study of sentences and paragraphs. The author emphasizes that composition is a practical and profitable exercise, and not a task to be performed grudgingly and painfully. Through a method of analytic exercises, the pupil learns the use of principles before being required to formulate them into rules. This text is meant to teach the art of composition by writing. By breaking down the components of writing into smaller steps, this book makes the writing process more accessible for students at all levels and lays the groundwork for impactful and effective writing in the future.
