The greater part of my share of these Anatomical and Patho logical Observations will be already, to a certain extent, familiar to those who attended my lectures, in the theatre of the Royal College of Surgeons, in Summer 1842, and Winter 1842 - 8.

The Memoir on the Secreting Structures is reprinted in a modified form from the Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh for 1842, and that on the Intestinal Villi from the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal of the same year. Those on the Placenta and Lymphatic Glands were read in the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1843, but were not submitted for publication. Abstracts of some of the others have also appeared from time to time in the reports of various Societies.

The Observations on the healthy Structure and Economy of Bone are, with the exception of those on the contents Of the corpuscules, an abstract of my lectures on this subject in the College of Surgeons in Winter 1842 - 8. I have considered this explanation necessary, in consequence of the resemblance be tween certain parts of my description, and those in the admirable chapter on the same subject in Todd and Bowman's Physiological Anatomy, drawn up from the observations of Mr. Tomes.
