Excerpt from Racial Integrity and Other Features of the Negro Problem
This volume is in no sense the result of any recent agitation of the race question. Its inception dates from the year 1900, and the manuscript was prac tically completed before the Brownsville. Affair, the Atlanta riots, and other less serious race conflicts aroused the country to at least a temporary realization of the existence of latent racial antagonisms which, under sufficient provocation, may at any time cause serious trouble. Advantage was, however, taken of a final revision of the manuscript to refer briefly to two or three of the more recent outbreaks because of their value as illustrations of facts and conditions nu der discussion.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written around the turn of the 20th century, examines the complex intertwining of moral and ethical challenges posed by the presence of a mixed-race population of African descent in the United States. The author rejects the views of the time that elevated whites and denigrated blacks, synthesizing instead a balanced perspective, carefully avoiding the incendiary rhetoric that dominated much of the discourse on race. Unlike the antislavery movement, the author decried the harms done to the black community by the actions of white philanthropists and the government, who often sought to help but ended up creating situations that further entrenched immoral behavior. The author argues that such well-meaning but misguided efforts to uplift the black community are rooted in low moral expectations of the race. This book contends that holding blacks to the same moral standards as whites is essential for both races to achieve genuine progress and harmony.
