Synopsis

Excerpt from A Manual of Marine Engineering: Comprising the Design, Construction, and Working of Marine Machinery

In 1880, the triple compound engine was little more than a dream; in fact, there were then many people who believed in, and continued to use, the ordinary expansive engine. The highest boiler pressure used by advanced and enterprising engineers was 100 lbs. Per square inch, and few of them had ventured even so far as that. Steel crank-shafts, and other heavy forgings made of steel, were looked upon as luxuries to be indulged in only by the British and Foreign Governments, and wealthy corpora tions. At the present time ingot steel forgings are common enough, and not very much dearer than iron ones. Engines with three cranks were few and far between, and generally limited to very large compound engines, in which a single low-pressure cylinder would have been abnormally large. Today, most of the ships recently built have engines with three cranks, and even tug boats and other small steamers are generally fitted with three crank triple engines, While larger vessels not infrequently have four-crank triple and quadruple engines.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book emerged during the late 19th century when marine engineering was in its formative years and steam-powered ships were replacing sailing vessels. The author, a lecturer at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, sought to provide a comprehensive study of marine engineering theory and practice for engineers, students, and all those interested in the science behind the rapid development of steamship technology. The book covers the history of marine propulsion methods, from wind power to jet-propulsion, alongside practical guidelines for the design, construction, and operation of marine machinery, including a detailed analysis of important concepts such as horsepower. Filled with diagrams, tables, and formulae, this book remains a valuable historical text on the development of a critical technology that shaped global trade and transportation networks. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
