Excerpt from The Christmas Holydays in Rome
To have seen Rome is a great fact in an individ al's life. So it appeared to the writer of these pages, when wandering among her mighty ruins, finding everywhere the bright pictures of youthful imagina tion surpassed. Cicero in his day declared, We are surrounded by the vestiges of history. How then should we feel when, standing on the same spot, we realize that eighteen centuries have since added their relics!
The title of this volume does not perhaps, give an adequate idea of its contents. The writer was led to adopt it, because his primary object in visit ing Rome at that season, was to witness the Christ mas services. His residence there was, however, prolonged through the greater part of the winter, all of which time was occupied in diligent study of the inexhaustible objects around him. To attempt a de scription of one half, in a work of this size, would be in vain; he has therefore only selected from his notes written on the spot, some of those things which excited the greatest interest in his own mind.

The author, an acute observer armed with knowledge and wit, takes us on a journey through the Eternal City during the cherished days of the Christmas season. Embarking from Genoa, the author immerses us into the colors, sounds, and scents of the Italian landscape. Arriving in Civita Vecchia, we experience the challenges of the customs house and encounter the subtle art of extracting bribes. During our journey towards Rome, the author weaves tales of the regions we pass through, breathing life into the ruins and landscapes with rich historical and literary anecdotes. Upon reaching Rome, we are awestruck by the city's monumental grandeur and solemn beauty, its ancient ruins standing in stark contrast against the vibrancy of papal Rome. The heart of this book lies in the author's exploration of St. Peters Cathedral, an excursion that elicits both wonder and dismay. On the one hand, the sheer architectural brilliance overwhelms, while on the other, the unmistakable signs of the Church's authoritarian past leave a bitter taste.
