Explore the Prado through a curator’s informed lens, with clear insights into its most debated works. This edition gathers thoughtful notes on paintings by masters and later artists, offering context, attribution questions, and assessments of surface, color, and composition. Readers will encounter detailed observations that illuminate how works were made, and how they relate to the broader art world of their time.
Inside, you’ll find concise, sometimes contrasting opinions on celebrated pieces and their workshop connections. The notes consider surface quality, drawing, and color, and they discuss how restorations or copies influence our reading of a picture. The collection also compares works across galleries, helping readers understand how Prado’s holdings fit into a larger European tradition.
Ideal for readers who want a sharper, more practical look at the Prado’s masterpieces and the craft behind them.

Excerpt from Madrid: Critical Notes on the Prado
In giving the relative rank of pictures, a system of starring has been followed.
Mention without a star indicates a picture of merit, otherwise it would not have been selected from the given collection at all.
One star means a picture of more than average importance, whether it be by a great or by a. Medi ocre painter.
Two stars indicates a work of high rank as art, quite regardless of its painter's name, and may be given to a picture attributed to a school or by a painter um known.
