Excerpt from Humanity and Its Problems
These various and con?icting views, however, become of the gravest importance when we remember the far-reaching in?uence they have had upon the condition of mankind in the various countries in which they have been held. There have been innumerable occasions when men have striven to improve their condition by modifying the social or political systems under which they lived, by a better cultivation of the intelligence, by the introduction of new processes in the arts, and bolder investigations in the sciences. It is not difficult to conceive how profoundly the progress of the race at such times has been affected by the prevailing views as to man's origin and destiny. A belief in the specific creation of man lent'itself easily to the assertion that any attempt to alter the existing state of things was an impious revolt against the Creator; and, as that belief was for many ages almost universally held, many an impulse to improvement must have been strangled at its birth. There is little doubt that, had other views on the great question of human origin prevailed at those periods, the direction and nature of human progress would have been considerably modified.
