Synopsis

Excerpt from State Purchase of Railways

The revival of trade, which has come at last, may Probable relax for a time the strain in the relations between 555113121 the railways and industry. But the conv1ction,tmde° gradually growing into an article of economical faith, that minimum rates of carriage alone will suffice for successful industrial competition with the foreigner, will re-kindle the war upon rates, which will only cease With their reform. There is a disposition to ignore or minimise the dissatisfaction with railway manage ment. Mr. Grierson, in his very able and almost judicial exposition of English and Foreign Railway rates, treats the opposition as sectional and selfish in the main, and he appeals from the clamorous to the silent interests. It is time the appeal should be answered if the silent interests have any position to defend. Silence is assumed to give consent, and judgment will go by default in the absence of a com plete defence.

Product Description

Excerpt from State Purchase of Railways Since I wrote on the State Purchase of Railways for the Fortnightly Review in June and December, 1886, the subject of railway legislation, management, and rates has attracted greater attention, and compared to the former ripple, a flood of railway literature has flowed in upon us. As might have been expected, however, criticism has not been so much directed to State purchase of railways as to the perfection of railway management under the heaven-born organizers who at present own the property. Like all other legislation, that affecting railways has been struck with paralysis by the omnipresent Irish difficulty. Ireland is too much with us "late and soon." The Parnell carriage stops the way, and even great State coaches cannot effect a passage. It was, therefore, natural that the "Railway Rates Bill" of last year should have been still-born. Will the bantling of the Board of Trade struggle into existence this year? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
