Excerpt from History of Washington: The Rise and Progress of an American State
It is to be regretted that the State government has not already made such provision as most other States have made for collecting, arranging and preserving the materials for its history. The Work can be done thoroughly and well at very moderate cost, once it is begun in a proper way. The greatest need will be for a competent secretary, whose heart will be in the work, who has already displayed some genius for it, and who has a wide acquaintance among the earlier settlers now living.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of the birth of a new state - Washington. It was originally part of a vast territory explored by Lewis and Clark and purchased by the US at the Louisiana Purchase. After the war of 1812, the US and Britain agreed to jointly occupy the region for ten years. The book discusses the impact of this agreement on the development of the region and the eventual formation of Washington as a separate entity. The author provides insights into the history, politics, and culture of the region, exploring themes of westward expansion, territorial disputes, and the struggle for statehood. The book highlights the significance of the region's natural resources, its role in the fur trade, and the challenges faced by early settlers. Ultimately, this book offers a comprehensive examination of the factors that shaped the history of Washington and its place in the broader narrative of American expansion.
