Synopsis

Excerpt from Selected Letters

The surviving lettels of Johnson are like the other records of his life very full for the last twenty years, and relatively scanty for that earlier period, much longer and much fuller of activity, in which Johnson had as yet no money, no established reputation, and no Boswell. Their editor, Dr. Birkbeck Hill, was acquainted with just over one thousand letters. In that series the letter which Johnson wrote to Lord Bute on 20 July 1762, acknowledging the grant of his pension, is numbered 143. Doubtless when he became a man of leisure, and a literary dictator, he wrote more letters than had for merly been his habit. But the discrepancy is due less to this cause than to the care taken by his later correspondents to preserve the letters of a famous man.
