Synopsis

Excerpt from Practical Intestinal Surgery, Vol. 1

Iuuretain their primitive position, held by the peritoneum, but that part of the tract supplied by the superior mesenteric artery, grows rapidly in length and size, and twists upon itself until the coecum gains its final home in the right iliac fossae. It can be learned from this, that all the peritoneal attachments are acquired, except that on the stomach and descending colon.

The vertebral digestive tract contains four distinct layers, with distinct functions of interest to the surgeon. The first is the mucous membrane. It arises from the hypoblast of the embryo. All the appendaged glands arise from the epithelium of this membrane. These glands are salivary, mucous, thymus, thyroid, lungs, liver, pancreas, and gastro-intestinal. All these organs, though very different in their ultimate function and structure, arise from the epithelium of the mucous membrane of the digestive tract.
