Excerpt from Mechanics: An Elementary Text-Book Theoretical and Practical
I believe it to be desirable that a student should commence the study of Mechanics With Kinematics and Kinetics, and 'have therefore arranged the book on this plan. At the same time it Will, I hope, be found that the Statics is in great measure independent of the other part of the subject, though at the cost of some repetition. It will be possible therefore for a teacher to take it before the Kinematics.
In the Third Part some of the simple experimental laws of Hydrostatics are discussed and explained.
The book has grown considerably beyond the limits of my lectures, though it is by no means a complete treatise on Elementary Mechanics still I h0pe it may prove useful as an introduction to the subject.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, written by the Assistant Director of the Cavendish Laboratory, is an elementary text on the principles of mechanics written with the aim of teaching the subject in a practical manner. As the author states in the preface, the most satisfactory way to learn mechanics is by performing experiments oneself. It is with this in mind that he has written the majority of the chapters, beginning with fundamental quantities such as length and mass before moving into a discussion of kinematics - the geometry of motion and its representation on graphs. The author has also included a series of thought experiments and exercises to test the reader's comprehension of the material discussed. One of the major themes of the book is the concept of the rate of change and how it can be used to describe motion with varying velocity. The author uses this concept to introduce some of the more advanced ideas of mechanics, such as Force, Energy, and Momentum which will be covered in later volumes. As such, this book will be of interest both to students of mechanics and those who wish to learn more about the historical development of the subject. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Seller Inventory # 9781330426845_0
