Excerpt from Modern French Philosophy: A Study of the Development Since Comte
This work is the fruit of much reading and research done in Paris at the Sorbonne and Bibliotheque nationale. It is, substantially, a revised form of the thesis presented by the writer to the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy, obtained in 1921. The author is indebted, therefore, to the University for per mission to publish. More especially must 'he record his deep gratitude to the French thinkers Who gave both stimulus and encouragement to him during his sojourn in Paris. Foremost among these is M. Henri Bergson, upon Whose frapport the Doctorate was conferred, and Who has expressed his appreciation of the work by con tributing a Foreword for publication.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, the work of a Liverpool University lecturer, examines the development of French philosophy from 1851 to 1921. The author argues that the philosophical landscape of the era was characterized by a reaction against both Eclecticism and Positivism, leading to the emergence of three primary currents of thought. The first, a Positivist and naturalist current that included such thinkers as Taine and Renan, sought to apply scientific methods to the study of human affairs. The second, represented by Cournot and Renouvier, centered around the development of a neo-critical philosophy that emphasized the limits of human knowledge. The third, the New Spiritual Philosophy, drew inspiration from Maine de Biran and culminated in the works of Bergson, Ravaisson, and Boutroux, who sought to reconcile science with the enduring questions of the human spirit. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the history of philosophy, particularly those with an interest in the development of French thought during the latter half of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
