Synopsis

Explore how we know what we know and why mind and matter meet in science. This collection surveys English philosophy today, offering a clear path to understanding perception, knowledge, and the limits of theory.

This edition presents rough notes on modern intellectual science, focusing on how psychology, philosophy, and physiology intersect. It argues for a careful distinction between mind-based explanations and physical science, with practical guidance on how to study thinking, feeling, and awareness without getting stuck in jargon or overblown claims.

  • Clear discussion of psychology, mind, and the nature of knowledge

  • Ways to separate philosophical reflection from physiological study

  • A framework for how perception connects feeling, matter, and understanding

  • Thoughtful critique of notionalism, relativism, and other tricky ideas

Ideal for readers of philosophy and science who want accessible ideas about how we know what we know, and why the mind matters in the pursuit of truth. This edition is suitable for curious readers seeking a grounded, introductory view of early 20th‑century intellectual science.

I was led, in connexion with this, to put together the intellectual views on which the moral View rested, or which had something of the character of prolegomena' to it, and had meant if they should come within reason able limits, to publish them in an Appendix.
