Thus she was when Roger came trudging in boyish haste along the path that led by the creek to the woods beyond. He halted at once when he suddenly found himself confronted by the sight of a bare-headed, gray-eyed girl, looking at him steadily and frankly.
She brushed a wisp of hair from her cheek as she dropped her skirt. Her face was warmly sun-colored; her lips were red and full. In her long-lashed, slum brous eyes lurked a light of interest. She was not absolutely a pretty child, yet it seemed as if she were -to Roger.
