The author begins by describing the diverse ethnic groups who made up the population of ancient Italy, the origins of the Etruscans, the history of the Ligurians, and the invasion of Italy by the Gauls. The book then goes into the specific regions of the peninsula: Etruria, Umbria and Picenum, the country of the Sabines, the Equi, Marsi, and other peoples the author terms Aborigines, Rome itself, Latium, Campania, Samnium and the Frentani, Apulia, Lucania, Bruttii, Venetia and Histria, and Liguria and Cisalpine Gaul. The penultimate section of the book deals with the topography, history, development, and monuments of the city of Rome itself, with particular and detailed attention paid to the fourteen regions into which Augustus had divided it. The book concludes with an overarching analysis of the geography, culture, and history of the peoples of the peninsula, and the significance of their achievements and contributions to the development of the Roman civilization that would come to dominate the entire Mediterranean world, before examining the ways in which the civilization of the Roman Republic was shaped by the societies that had preceded it, particularly by those of the Etruscans and the Greeks.
