Excerpt from Tchaikovsky
In 1898 appeared The Collected Writings of T chaihovshy, edited, With a preface, by the well known Russian critic G. Laroche. From this book I made a collection of extracts showing the composer's musical tastes and sympathies, and these papers appeared in the Musical Standard under the title, Tchaikovsky as a Musical Critic. The fact that they were very well noticed in several Russian papers, notably the Moscew Viedomosti, induced me to re print them here, with two additional chapters dealing with Tchaikovsky's attitude towards Russian music. Later on, at the suggestion of Mr. C. A. Barry, I undertook to translate the diary of Tchaikovsky's tour abroad in 1888, now published for the first time in English. And so the book grew to its present size.
