Excerpt from The Exchanges and Speculation, Vol. 20 Whatever the merits or defects of this work may be, it embodies fairly continuous observation of the workings of the exchanges for more than twelve years by the author, who during seven years of that time was a financial writer for two New York newspapers, and for nearly the same length of time has lectured on the exchanges, to students at two universities in New York City. From the keen questions and discussions of scores of these students, many of whom have been and are connected with banking and brokerage concerns, much of the material in this book has been threshed out, and it has been my effort to discuss the very questions that such teaching experience indicates are of vital interest to young men in the business world. In a small degree I have drawn on the former Modern Business Text on "Investment and Speculation." This Text is the joint product of Professor Thomas Conway Jr. and myself.
