Excerpt from Elementary Mathematical Astronomy
It has not been assumed that the reader's knowledge of mathe maties extends beyond the more rudimentary portions of Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry. A knowledge of elementary Dynamics will, however, be required in reading the last three chapters, but all dynamical investigations have been left till the end of the book, thus separating dynamical from descriptive Astronomy. The principal properties of the Sphere required in Astronomy have been collected in the Introductory Chapter; and, as it is impossible to understand Kepler's Laws without a slight knowledge of the properties Of the Ellipse, the more important Of these have been collected in the Appendix for the benefit of students who have not read Conic Sections.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book provides a thorough introduction to elementary mathematical astronomy, aiming to bridge the gap between popular and technical knowledge on the subject. It introduces key concepts such as spherical geometry and astronomical coordinates, topics traditionally absent from introductory texts. The book is structured to aid the learning process, with worked examples to illustrate each principle. It covers subjects such as the Earth's diurnal rotation, the Sun's annual motion in the ecliptic, and the Moon's motion, providing a solid foundation in astronomical principles. The book concludes by exploring dynamical astronomy, offering deeper insights into the gravitational forces that shape the universe. Thoroughly illustrated, containing solutions to each example, plus notes and answers to examination questions, it serves as an excellent textbook for undergraduate astronomy students, as well as an accessible primer for anyone seeking to expand their astronomical knowledge. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
