Synopsis

Excerpt from The Philosophical Theory of the State

I must repeat that these remarks are not intended to be controversial. There is nothing in them which serious men of all schools may not accept. They are meant to defend my attitude in treating the Real Will, and Freedom in the greater Self, as matters of universal concern, and not merely as hopes and fancies cherished by educated persons. Indeed, although it would be churlish for a student to disparage literary education, it must never be forgotten that, as things are to-day, the citizens who live by handicraft possess a valuable element of brain-culture, which is on the whole denied to the literary class. Whatever, therefore, may be wanting in the following pages, it is not, I think, the relation of their subject-matter to the general life of peoples.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the philosophical foundations and principles of constructing an ethical, purposeful society, with a focus on the birth and complexities of nation-states. It begins by examining the fundamental principles of the Greek city-state and the philosophical interpretations it sparked from renowned thinkers like Plato and Aristotle, who believed that a healthy society depends on the unity of its people and the fulfillment of each individual's role within the state. The author then traces the evolution of political philosophy into the modern era, particularly with the rise of nation-states and the influence of the social sciences, such as economics, sociology, psychology, and more. Each of these disciplines offers unique perspectives on the nature of society, from a materialistic emphasis on economic conditions to a more holistic view of social and mental organization. The book highlights the tension between individual liberty and collective responsibility, exploring the ideas of self-governance, rights, and obligations within the context of a larger social order. Through a comprehensive analysis of philosophical and sociological theories, this book provides valuable insights into the intricate relationship between the individual and society, ultimately demonstrating how a truly just and ethical society can be achieved by harmonizing individual aspirations with the collective good. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
