After eight years' use in the class-room, this book has been wholly rewritten - upon the same general lines, indeed, as the first edition, but with so many and so important changes in details as to make it virtually a new book. In making the revision, the authors have had two distinct pur poses: to make the book simpler and more attractive as a text-book, and to make it more thorough and exhaustive as a treatise.
