Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of War
Although fully aware that it is much easier to criticize operations after the result is known than to direct them at the time, I shall not hesitate to invite attention to what appear to be evident mistakes on either side; this, not for the purpose of finding fault, or instituting com parisons, but with the hope that it may serve to draw the attention Of our officers to the same points, and, perhaps, assist in preventing similar errors on our own part hereafter. From the general interest felt in the late war, it is more than probable that every officer of our army followed step by step the movements of the allies from Gallipoli to Varna, from Varna to Old Fort, and thence to the scene of the gigantic strife in the Heracleidan Chersonese.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book presents historical insights on the evolution of military strategy and fortifications with the Crimean War as a case study. The author, a military professional who visited the battlefields after the war, provides detailed descriptions of battle plans and their execution, fortifications, and the relative weaponry used by the combatants. Beyond the historical account, this book analyzes the shortcomings in decision-making and combat execution by both sides and explores the recurring theme of Russian strengths and weaknesses in warfare. The Crimean War becomes a lens through which the author explores military theory and the state of combat in the mid-19th century, with insights that remain relevant to military strategy today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
