Excerpt from Selected Prose Works of G. E. Lessing
Tm; translation of the Laokoon in this volume is substantially that of Mr. E. O. Beasley, formerly of Wadham College, Oxford, published in 1 853, the merits of which have been generally acknowledged. For this edition it has been subjected to a complete and careful revision with the object of making it as accurate and literal a representation of the original as possible. A synopsis of its contents, which it is hoped will be found useful in a careful study of the work, has also been prefixed.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, a seminal treatise, is a masterclass in the distinctions between the plastic arts and poetry. Published in the 18th century, it is the product of the author's deep engagement with ancient Greek literature, sculpture, and aesthetics, examining how each art form achieves its goals, and the unique possibilities and limitations of each medium. The author, delving into a wealth of examples from Greek culture and literature, argues that the plastic arts and poetry serve distinct purposes and have different expressive capacities. Using the famous sculpture Laocoà n and its depiction of physical suffering as a focal point, the author illustrates how artists and poets approach the representation of emotion and pain in fundamentally different ways. This book explores the subtle interplay between aesthetics, culture, and artistic interpretation, offering a profound insight into the nature of artistic creation that remains relevant for contemporary thinkers. It encourages critical engagement with these art forms and enhances our appreciation of their distinct expressive powers.
