Duty, faith, and a hard choice test a nun’s heart in this moving tale. In Single Strictness follows Sarah, a lay sister who has given years to a convent’s demanding routine. When hardship and a painful change in leadership collide with a vow she made to a young woman named Phyllis, she faces a crisis of obligation, prayer, and personal longing. The story sheds light on the pressures of religious life and the quiet questions that can reshape a life of service.
- A nun’s inner struggle between duty to others and personal longing.
- The toll of hard work, limited time for prayer, and the weight of promises.
- Complex relationships between nuns, servants, and the outside world.
- Moments of memory, guilt, and the search for meaning within a strict path.

Excerpt from In Single Strictness

Another big job of work, I said, Six or eight months at least, for little can be saved from Impressions and Opinions; and forthright I began to consider A Parley as a possible title for the new book, else Parleys, Soli loquies and Meditations, without however, being able to come to a decision. Time will sift out the title better than I can, I said, and laid the importunate question aside.
