George Sylvester Viereck is remembered today for his contributions to fantasy literature. Born in Germany he immigrated to the United States with his family at age 11. He was editor of the magazine The Fatherland, which advocated fair play for the Central Powers when World War I came out. The magazine quickly became very popular, reaching a circulation of 100,000, and changed its name to American Monthly when the US broke with Germany. Despite his support for the American war effort, the anti-German hysteria affected Viereck, and he suffered the boycott that many German-Americans felt during those years.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book follows Ernest, an ambitious young poet who is given an opportunity to live and work under the wing of the successful older writer, Reginald Clarke. Ernest's work begins to flourish, but his admiration for Clarke is shaken, first, when he overhears Clarke ruthlessly dismiss a protegee, and then, when Ernest realizes that Clarke has plagiarized his own play. Deprived of his idol, Ernest struggles to find his own artistic path while dealing with the emotional fallout of this betrayal. The book unpacks the dark sides of both the literary and elite social worlds, and the danger of mistaking fame for integrity. It explores the nature of art, the complex artist-muse relationship, the selfishness of genius, and the fine line between inspiration and theft. Ultimately, the book cautions that not all that glitters is gold.
