That Science has a philosophy is well known to all who have any proper conception of what is meant by the theory of Evolution. In the following pages that doc trine is assumed as already virtually established. The main conception which it is their object to set forth is itself an illustration of the progress of ideas from the indefinite to the definite, for it has been hinted at by thinkers in all ages, while later ones have approached it till they have almost had it in their grasp. The develop ment of it into its full breadth and universality, taking that to be possible, might be called a larger integration of thought or knowledge than has ever yet been evolved.
