Excerpt from Chronicles of the Customs Department
In the collection of the Customs many curious events have occurred which, perchance, are little known to the present generation. The existing records of the London Custom House possess a national importance, and in the following pages will be found a brief history of the origin and develop ment of a system, which, from small proportions has grown to such an extent, that the Exchequer at the present time derives a sum exceeding twenty three millions annually from the Customs.
