The bath-room was inside the favourite apartment of Placidus, where he was now holding counsel, and could only be entered through the latter, from tch it was separated by a heavy velvet curtain. Esca, surrounded by the materials of the toilet, had been sitting for a longer time than he knew, lost in thought, until aroused by the mention of Mariamne's name. Thus it was that the four others believed the bath-room empty, and their conversation unheard.
