Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book, originally published in the mid-19th century, delves into the foundational principles of arithmetic, guiding readers through the essential concepts of numeration, addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying logic behind these operations, rather than simply memorizing rules. Set against the backdrop of a shifting educational landscape where rote learning was giving way to a more rational approach, this book advocates for a deeper comprehension of mathematical processes. It meticulously explores various number systems, including decimal and non-decimal representations, shedding light on the historical evolution of counting methods. The book delves into thought-provoking discussions on abstract numbers, the concept of units, and the general properties that govern numerical relationships. It underscores the significance of a solid arithmetic foundation for further mathematical exploration and its application in daily life. Through clear explanations and practical exercises, this work empowers readers to develop a more profound and meaningful understanding of the fundamental building blocks of mathematics.
