Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1954. Second (2nd) Printing (publisher's code "A-D", signifying January, 1954) of the First (1st) Edition, the first printing of which was in December, 1953. Near Fine condition. No Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square with no markings of any kind. The Binding is gray quarter cloth to blue boards, with yellow title, etc., to spine which shows some fading at the head and heel, corners mostly square, slightly bumped, and some partial tanning to endpapers. See photos. 253 pages. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". This book was a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award for Non-Fiction. A collection of essays, stories, poems etc., most of which had first appeared in the New Yorker, some in Harper's and one in the Atlantic Monthly. At least one is published here for the first time.
