Since their inception, theforest schools have been concerned primarily with the training ofpractitioners, with increasing emphasis upon the industrial andeconomic aspects of forestry. The faculties of most forest schoolshave been overburdened with teaching and other responsibilities andhave had neither the time for, nor a strong natural urge toward,scientific research. Until comparatively recently, instructors havebeen chosen without particular reference to their inherentaptitudes and special training as investigators. The forest schoolsare now rather abruptly confronted with the problem of developingresearch projects of their own and of training investigators forthe regional forest experiment stations. The task is by no means aneasy one, and a number of important factors in the generalsituation must be visualized accurately if much misguided effort isto be avoided. It must be admitted that, at present, many of theforest schools have neither the resources nor the personnel forsuddenly initiating comprehensive programs of research in forestproduction, such as provide an essential background or environmentof research in the efficient training of investigators. Even in thelarger institutions real progress is not likely to be attainedmerely by the expedient of requiring each member of the staff todevote a portion of his time to research activities. The roots ofthe situation extend far deeper than this. For the training ofoutstanding investigators of unusually broad vision, such as arerequired in the pioneer task of developing sound and far reachingprograms of research in forest production, the active andsympathetic cooperation of the natural sciences must be...
