Hett lays bare the misguided confidence of conservative politicians who believed that Hitler and his followers would willingly support them, not recognizing that their efforts to use the Nazis actually played into Hitler’s hands. They had willingly given him the tools to turn Germany into a vicious dictatorship.

About the Author
Benjamin Carter Hett is Professor of History at Hunter College, CUNY, USA. He specializes in the history of the twentieth century and is the author of six books: Death in the Tiergarten (2004), Crossing Hitler (2008), Burning the Reichstag (2014), The Death of Democracy: Hitler's Rise to Power and the Downfall of the Weimar Republic (2018) and Otto John -- Patriot oder Verräter: Eine Deutsche Biographie (with Michael Wala, 2019) and Nazi Menace: Hitler, Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, and the Road to War (2020).
